Darragh Brady
Winner of the Spring 2004 Bead O'the Quarter
I have long admired Michael Barley's beads and when Corina
Tettinger's Spotlight
on Silver came in the mail I sat down and started
making beads. When I realized she had a section on how Michael
Barley made some of his extravagantly beautiful beads, I was very
excited. This bead was a happy (probably, almost certainly, not to
be repeated) result of that experimentation. I unfortunately did
not record the steps in its birth so recounting here is guesswork.
I was definitely working with a cobalt blue glass base, silver foil,
and gold cranberry pink (Rubino Oro). I was
also experimenting with lots of transparent layers -- in an e-mail
from Michael Barley he said that a lot of his effects were the
result of many layers of translucent color laid on top of each
other and I have been trying that ever since. This bead was also
encased with clear Lausha. I know I should
be able to do it with Moretti but ever since I discovered Lausha
it is all I want to use.
