Winner of the Winter 2005 Bead O'the Quarter
Sculpture Challenge
I have always enjoyed sculpture, seeing the
work of the ancient Greeks and Romans, Michelangelo, Rodin. Seeing
bronze and stone take on the shape and expression of movement
of man has always fascinated me. I have worked in other medias. I
carve wood signs, work in metal and some ceramic, but I have
become addicted to this molten glass media. It's challenging because
you are one step removed; you can't form it with your fingers or run
your hand over an area to check for smoothness, until it's too late.
This man was sculpted in black borosilicate glass. The bead he is
sitting on is a blown inside out boro bead. For the inside out bead:
You start out with a tube (1-1/4" medium wall). You pull points
(handles to work the glass), separate and open up the tubes, take
one side and fume it with silver and gold, stripe it inside with
blue and green glass stringers. Then put the other end back on, seal
it, and blow the glass to shape. Separate the handles off one at a
time and then open up the ends on the bead.
