Jinx Garza, the Winner of the Autumn 2002
Bead O'the Quarter
The design of this bead combines elements from my two favorite styles. To
create a subtle, Art Nouveau-ish background, I made the base bead using
the gravity technique demonstrated by Jim Smircich at the Corning
Gathering in 1998. I laid transparent grey stringers lengthwise onto a 1.5
inch ivory bicone, then drenched the bead in extreme heat until the lines
began to flow like molten lava. Juxtaposed against those serpentine swirls
are eight bold peacock blue dots pulled into teardrops, each trailing
three tiny raised black dots reminiscent of the Arts and Crafts style.
