SGB-MA Meeting Minutes July 16,
2005

here!)
1. Call to order
(Bob Miller). The
meeting was called to order at approximately 10:15 am.
2. Welcome to new members.
Welcome to Amy Ouelette
of Zoozii press fame; Steve and Sam from Jodel
Glass. Approximately
30 people attended the meeting.
3. Secretarys Report. (Deborah Gibson): April
meeting minutes were posted on the
website and sent to the membership via yahoo groups email.
4. Treasurers Report. (Sharon Lieberman).
Sharon
reported that we have approximately $4,975 in the treasury.
5. Vice Presidents
Report (Debra Dowden-Crockett).
Debra reported that Kate Fowle will be teaching her
advanced class the last Thursday/Friday in September --
September 29-30 -- (before the October bead bazaar).
Also we are pursuing a 2-day (noncertification) PMC class
with artist Kelly Russell and/or Barbara Becker Simon for a combo
PMC/glass class.
*** We
solicited ideas for upcoming classes and demonstrations. See
addendum attached. If you would like to vote on a future demo,
or have any additional ideas, send an email to Debra Dowden Crockett.***
If you
are interested in the Kelly Russell PMC class and also let her know.)
6. Web Site report (Janet Olsen): Janet reported
that theres a review of Jim Smircichs
new DVD on the website. There
is also a new review of Corina Tettinger's 2004
issue in the "Spotlight On" series, this pamphlet
entitled 'Spotlight on Magic Color
Reactions'. There are direct links for ordering the books.
7. There was
discussion regarding links to member websites.
Our policy/practice is for members (in good standing; i.e.,
dues paid) to request a link to their website by contacting Janet
at feedback@sgb-midatlantic.org.
Janet also encouraged members to send in hot tips
those tips that break the code for particular techniques
and/or time-saving tips, for our Tip
of the Week feature. Essentially,
any idea or Ah-Ha! you jot down during a class could make a
great tip!
8. ISGB Regional Director Report (Nolly
Gelsinger). Nolly
reported on recent elections and the ISGB survey.
Apparently only 200 or so members voted during the last
election and although there was controversy, Nolly assured
everyone that the election was accomplished following established
policy/procedure. There
was a significantly greater response on the survey which will be
used to better meet the needs of the membership.
Nolly also reported on the change in venue at the
Gatheringapparently a change in fire marshals resulted in a
change of mind with respect to having open torches, propane, etc.
in the hotel as previously arranged.
However, new arrangements/accommodations were made and all
is well. Nolly
indicated that Vince Henley had come up with bylaws/code of
regulations for consideration by the ISGB Board.
9. Membership Coordinators Report (Darragh Brady).
Darragh reported that we have 83 paid members and a total
of 119 on the rolls. Remember,
you must be a member in good standing (dues paid) in order to sign
up for classes, etc. Also,
if your email address changes, please let Darragh know or go on
the yahoo website and change it yourself.
If your email is not current, you wont receive the
minutes or other announcements that may be of interest to you.

Old Business.
a. Status of Buyers group for purchase discounts
(Private side not part of the chapter).

opportunities for group buys of glass from
Germany
(STAY TUNED).
Bob Miller
brought several rod warmers (actually they are hair rod warmers
that reach a temp of 860 degrees Fahrenheit) for sale and there
could be a future group buy if theres enough interest.
b. Chapter table at BSGW Bead Bazaar, April
23/24, results. Linda
Spence/Sharon Leiberman reported that there were 11 participants
who sold a total of $2,011.00.
The spring bazaars typically sell less than the fall
bazaars.
Karen King
reported that several vendors have stopped attending because the
venue is unappealing and sales/attendance has continued to decline
as a result (New Carrollton, Md).
Bob Miller
indicated he would ask whether the Bead Society of Greater
Washington (BSGW) is researching other venues.

Ands lots of them sewn together to create magnificent works
of wearable art.
Our very own Amy Phifer won the contest for the Whimsical

whimsy!

Bead

15. Zoozii Press Demo featuring Amy Ouelette.
(Pictures
from the demo are here!) WHAT A GREAT DEMO!!!! Amy
was a ball of fire on the torch demonstrating each of her presses,
plus how to mix/match presses to achieve different effects.
Amy demonstrated how to use the two hole mandrel and even
gave us a sneak preview of her newest presses that she will
debut at the Gathering. This
was the longest demo in recent history as everyone stayed to watch
the marvels of Amys presses.
Amy also demonstrated use of the Val Cox marver a
unique base with molded brass top for various shaping needs.
Darragh Brady was the lucky recipient of the drawing for a
Val Cox marver. Amy
nearly sold out of presses she brought with her and took orders
for several more. Amy
was both entertaining and informative simply a delight.
We give her 5 STARS!!!!!
16. Speaking of spending money, Steve and his daughter,
Sam, filled our shopping carts with lots of great glass from Jodel
Glass. Steve made the
trip all the way from Rhode Island
and were pretty sure they covered their travel expenses at a
minimum. A BIG THANK
YOU to Steve, Monique, and Sam for bringing such a wonderful
assortment of glass for us to peruse and buy, including tri-color
lauscha. If you missed
this opportunity, visit them at their website: www.jodelglass.com.
Also a big thanks to Nolly and Laura for bringing their
frits as you can see, there were ample opportunities to spend
$$$!
